I just did a quick informal survey on what suppliers like Dell and Sun are
currently shipping.

Both are shipping some systems with 512M memory. (For Dell,
it's actually fairly rare now that Vista is the default.) Therefore,
we can conclude that installing on 512M should be an absolute
requirement, and will be for a considerable time yet.

I didn't come across any systems with less memory than 512M,
although I have seen 256M machines being offered in high street
stores recently.

As for media, DVD-writers are still not standard equipment, emphasizing
my earlier point that for download we need the CD image so that users
stand a good chance of being able to write it to media.
