The primary reason is that, based on the data I have (what I see in my 
folders, plus a survey last year of Linux users[1]), Thunderbird is at 
least as popular as Evolution, with both having significantly large user 
bases.  I would be happy to receive pointers to more recent or 
higher-quality data.

To answer a later query from another poster, the sizes are roughly:

Thunderbird: 19 MB
Evolution: 11 MB
