Well, we are having these rather fundamental discussions on an OpenSolaris community list. And I cannot agree with your characterisation of this project. I think it is about the next step in growing the OpenSolaris community - (or do you consider that to be Sun's PR?). So, to your question, does the actual community need a distribution? Clearly not - it already exists, it is the "actual community". We want to consider the potential community.
