<https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-vfZb86czvuk/T4rQhXyMs6I/AAAAAAAAAko/E2--tytST_Q/s1600/tall+tree-+bark+closeup+1.jpg> Thanks Surajit ji for sharing the snaps of Ficus Religiosa. I have truly been blind and ignorant all these years- now I know that it sheds its leaves, and will be on the lookout.
Thanks Mahadeswara ji for your inputs. I will observe this tree carefully. As it is in a private apartment space, I have to check if I can get permission to enter the premises to have a closer look. I have enclosed a zoomed up portion of the bark in case it offers any further clues- I could not see any obvious spines.
