The original meaning of default is 'a fault' not a fix for a fault. Programmers 
love playing on words, hence the opposite meaning in software.

When we walk into a garment shop and ask for a t-shirt, the salesman shows us 
a few samples based on some sensible assumptions. It is the same process 
working here.

True. Most software terms are metaphors often from different perspectives. 
Where else can one find a window on a desktop :-). So it is difficult for most 
people to grasp the concept behind a particular term. Once translators grasp 
it they are free to map it to the vernacular.

I believe Sanskrit has a ruleset (convention?) to compose words for new 
concepts from a pool of around 2000 roots.
