Some years ago we had decided to create a linux equivalent for the very
popular Windows-based Baraha software, so that linux users would have
access to this same keyboard setup for all Indian languages. We first
set it up for Hindi, and when that was working well then Gora Mohanty
made similar keymaps for several other Indian languages. This was all
done using m17n.
At the time I was very keen to get the Hindi (hi-baraha.mim) keymap
working well, and indeed we got it working perfectly.
Now I am needing to work with Bangla, and have found that in the
bn-baraha.mim file there are two issues. If someone here can give me a
hand to solve these, I will be extremely grateful.
Here are the two issues:
1. The Bengali script equivalent of ऋ is not working. In the Baraha
keymap, the code for this letter is "Ru". When I try to type this
character, it appears only as "Rউ" rather than the Bengali letter ऋ. All
the other letters in the keymap work; only this one does not.
2. The classical Bengali script has no letter for "va" (व). It has only
"ba" (ब). But those who write Sanskrit shlokas using the Bengali script
need a character for "va", and for that a convention has been adopted
that the Bengali letter for "ba" ("ব" ) will be used for the sound "va".
And for "ba", the character is slightly changed i.e. with a line through
the bottom portion (पेट कटा हुआ), resulting in "ৰ" , just as is done in
devanagari.
So to achieve this, I moved the "ব" over to the "va" location in the
keymap (bn-baraha.mim file). I then found somewhere the changed version
of the character i.e. with the line through the bottom portion (पेट कटा
हुआ), and put this new character "ৰ" , in at the "ba" location in the
keymap file. But all consonants must be entered using the halant form
i.e. half-form, and I could not manage to enter this character with a
halant. Due to this, the character is not working properly i.e. will not
combine with other letters when needed, to form conjunct characters.
I am attaching here the bn-baraha.mim as originally created, and then
the changed version (for attaching, I have changed its name to "new
bn-baraha.mim") where I have moved the "ba" letter over to the "va"
location, and for "ba" placed the full rather than halant version of
"ba".
Someone please kindly help with these two needed repairs.
