>From my completely lay point of view (I know neither Sanskrit, nor Bangla, nor Assamese, nor Unicode), here is the issue: The Bangla script is used for writing Bangla language. All the characters needed for this are defined in the Unicode standard. The Bangla script can also be used for writing other languages. One of the languages that may be be written using this script is Sanskrit. Unlike the Bangla language, all the characters needed for writing other languages are not defined in the Unicode standard. Specifically, the "pet-kata-Ba" ("Ba" with a line through its area) -- used to denote "Va" -- which is needed for writing Sanskrit, is not available in the Unicode Bangla character set. There may exist other languages written using the Bangla script that require characters not present in the current standard. Note that each of these use cases is a niche one. The OP had proposed using the "Ra" from Assamese script, which has the same form as the "pet-kata-Ba" to write Sanskrit in Bangla script, which is being opposed as a hack. One set of posters on this thread is requesting precedent and documentation for (in general) this use of the Bangla script and specifically the use of this particular character when writing Sanskrit using the Bangla script. Karunakar has just posted the images, we await the references. Corrections to my understanding appreciated. Withholding my own comments on the matter until the picture is clearer.
