The recently released 2010 QS Asian University Rankings has
placed only two Indonesian universities in its top 100 list, down from
three universities last year. While the University of Indonesia
(UI) in Jakarta retains its 50th place, Yogyakarta’s Gadjah Mada
University (UGM) dropped to 85th from 63rd last year, while the Bandung
Institute of Technology (ITB), which was placed 80th last year, has is
now ranked 113th.ITB’s position as Indonesia’s third-best
performer has been replaced by Airlangga University in Surabaya, whose
ranking rose to 109th place from 130th last year. While last year
Indonesia managed to place three of its universities in the top 100 list
and six in the top 200, this year it has only two universities in the
top 100, but has seven in the top 200.Other Indonesian
universities that made it into the top 200 list are the Bogor Institute
of Agriculture (119th), Padjajaran University (161st) and Diponegoro
University (161st).Only 11 countries were placed in the top 200
list, 57 of which are Japanese universities. Japan has managed to place
its top five universities in the top 10, although its best performer,
the University of Tokyo, only managed to secure fifth place form third
last year.“Government-led investment, most recently through the
‘Global 30’ program, has helped drive up standards by attracting
high-quality international students and staff, areas of the rankings in
which Japanese universities excel,” QS Quacquarelli Symonds, the
publisher of the university rankings, said of the Japanese universities
in a press statement sent to The Jakarta Post earlier this week.It
also explained the factors used to measure the ranking included the
quality of research through citation and the proportion of international
students and staff.“The rankings indicate that an international
outlook adds considerably to the reputation and status of universities
in the region,” QS added.Last year, the No. 1 position in the
rankings was held by the University of Hong Kong, although the runner-up
this year was the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology,
rather than last year’s Chinese University of Hong Kong. The
National University of Singapore (NUS) remains one of the best
universities in Southeast Asia, with its ranking rising from 10th place
last year to third place this year.China only managed to place
its best-performing university, Peking University, in 11th place and
India with its Indian Institute of Technology in Bombay in 36th place. Other
Southeast Asian univer-sities included in the top 50 besides the NUS
