AlphaServer system helps Bunny win Oscar

For the second consecutive year, Compaq AlphaServer systems helped a motion
picture win an Academy Award.
Last year it was Titanic a three-hour, blockbuster with special effects
created on more than 200 AlphaServer systems that won Best Picture. This
year it was Bunny a seven-minute movie created on 40 four-CPU AlphaServer
systems that won an Oscar for Best Animated Short Film.

To render the visual effects of the ship and its thousands of passengers
during Titanic post-production, Alpha-based workstations and server systems
crunched through terabytes of data. Digital Domain, the company which
managed the computer generated images for the movie, relied on the power of
more than 200 Alpha systems running 24 hours a day for two straight months,
averaging an astounding 800 million computer instructions per second. The
Alpha servers were running on the Linux operating system. The film's special
effects won numerous awards.

Bunny is the first to use radiosity, a computer rendering technique that
mimics the most subtle properties of natural light. Bunny beat out The
Canterbury Tales, Jolly Roger, More and When Life Departs for the award.
