Tom,

this might not have anything to do with your problem, but not so long ago I
ran into similar trouble: 

on an AIX 3.2.5 AFS server I installed PTF U433623 which was recommended for
I forgot what reason. The PTF caused lots of pre-reqs to be installed as
well. 

As a result, 'afsd' would no longer return - the machine just got stuck
during startup. I then de-installed (I think 'reject' is the IBM term) just
U433623, rebooted and 'afsd' would return normally. 

When I then wanted to demonstrate the effect to my friendly IBM engineer, to
my surprise, after re-installing U433623, afsd started up normally! 

Rather than digging deep into that logic, I installed U433623 on all our
servers, de-installed it, re-installed it and everything was fine...
