Whoops. Sorry for the blank-o. 
At any rate, some friends of mine and I had a similar discussion the other day.
Without a home cell, the AFS client is mostly useless, which means that if
anything, giving away the client would encourage more people to buy the server
software. Essentially it would be a free demo, but of course you really
wouldn;t be able to write anything anywhere, so you wouldn't get a demo of
those capabilities.

People have periodically talked about a free version of the AFS client. Anyone
still thinking about it?
