Ah, but you have not heard from the Creative Co-ops at JPL. :-)
Josh Wilmes and I have put together what amounts to a hack, but it
works reliably. It relies on the use of LD_PRELOAD and the dynamic
substitution of several critical libc functions (getpwent, getspnam,
crypt) to do the trick. We've tested it in our environment and it
works fine, but ymmv. We have an install script, which you should
obviously run on a test machine first, ("make install", reboot) and
voila, you get a PAG, tokens, and CDE login. Our setup also replaces
the standard xlock with an AFS-aware version, to round things out. If
anyone's interested, I'll point them to a public area where all the
