Yeah, this is one of those things that was such a good idea, we'd already
gone rather far down the path of inventing something similar before we
really looked at it. :)
There are a whole bunch of package management systems out there now, all
of which do roughly the same thing, and since they're all designed to
maintain a tree separate from the directory on the user's path and mostly
all take into account the idea of an NFS server or something that's
exporting trees for multiple platforms, they pretty much all do a
reasonable job with AFS as well. So you have the luxury of looking around
a bit and finding the one that fits the way you think.
