Folks,

Many people have been asking about man pages for the AFS commands.
Here's an update on where we are.

Our documentation staff has found a way to automatically generate a
text-only version of the Command Reference Manual. The text is broken
up into a number of files, one per command or subcommand. The output
isn't perfect, but very closely resembles the printed manual.

The files can be used in two ways. First, you are free to convert the
text files to man pages by inserting the appropriate troff man macros,
removing the existing indentation, etc. I expect that this would
require a substantial amount of manual editing effort. Note also that
the various vendors have slightly different man macros, so a man page
>From SunOS may display incorrectly (with words missing) under Ultrix.

Or you can use them as preformated man pages simply by placing them in
the "cat1" directory instead of "man1". The "man" command will then
display these files, but won't attempt to perform any conversion
beforehand.

The files will be officially introduced with the AFS 3.2a release
coming up later this month, but you can take a peek at them right now.
Any site contact with a Transarc.com authentication account should be
able to read them from:
        /afs/transarc.com/product/afs/3.2/man/cat1

BTW, we've recently seen sporadic network problems, so if you get
"Connection timed out" errors while reading the files, try again at an
off-peak hour. If you still have trouble, have your local AFS Site
Contact report the problem.
