I have a mod to the cache manager which doesn't seem to have
any impact on existing programs, but stops dead the ping
to other cells in /afs. It involves only doing the
FetchStatus when you *absolutely-positivly* have to
do it.
In the case of /afs/cs.cmu.edu, from umich.edu for
example, the stat call from AFS ACTUALLY gives up
LIES for the fields, since the only thing needed is
the 'd' bit, (well, the size too, but the user routine
ain't supposed to directly use that for anything).
When (and if), you actually NEED the data from /afs/cs.cmu.edu,
like when you need to enumerate the data, the FetchStatus
is performed.
The LIES happen only for mount points which reference
foreign cells. In that sense, it works throughout the
entire file system, not just at /afs.
