Backup problem

hello,
We have some problem with the afs backup on tapes. I got an error :
readTape: tape I/O error Cannot read label on tape
I can not read the tape anymore either with readlabel or with scantape

Has anyone encountered such a situation ?
Is there a way ( a program) to read ( and restore) some data from that
tape ??
