I work on suns and don't have access to any IBM's, so I'm not sure if
syslog is even available under AIX, but writing to /dev/console is a
poor approach to logging. Syslog is the better answer, since those messages
can be saved to files in addition to routing them to a central or multiple
loghosts. One of my main complaints is what if you get more than 24 lines
of messages to your console? You lose some of your messages since they
scroll off the top of the screen.
I've talked to Lyle about this, and filed an RFE but haven't heard any
word. To be honest, I don't know if logging to syslog rather than writing
directly to /dev/console would solve the problem you described above, but
I still believe Transarc needs to make a change to their logging scheme.
