Sounds very much like the problem we had. We bypassed the problem by using
an old 3.5 version of butc. However, Transarc reported the following as
the resolution (although we haven't yet tried it):

(Base configuration 2.5). This patch will include support for the

NFS/AFS Translator on AIX is supported with NFS Version 2 only
- IRIX 6.5.x

NFS/AFS translator not supported
- Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 3, 4, 5, or 6

With this release we are also announcing support for the following:
- Windows 2000
- All SGI IRIX 6.5.x
- All Redhat Linux 2.2.x based kernel
We are also currently preparing to support AFS on Solaris 8. This port
will be available on the Web and in the AFS product tree in the
coming weeks.
This release also includes several improvements such as:
- improved token handling with Windows NT and 95/98
- improved logging in Windows NT
Obtaining AFS v3.6 Patch 1
---------------------------
For those customers currently licensed for AFS, AFS v3.6 Patch 1 is available
for download via the Web and the AFS product tree. Using your AFS
authentication account, you can download this software from:

If you do not have an AFS authentication account and would like to
request one, please complete our Authentication Account Request Form
at:
http://www.transarc.com/Downloads/authreq1.html
AFS contacts who already have authentication accounts can use their
existing account and password to access the patches. Please be aware
that AFS Authentication accounts are set to expire the day that your
site's AFS Support contract expires. Accounts are then extended upon
renewal of your Support contract.
The AFS v3.6 Patch 1 binaries are also available via the AFS network.
Network customers can access the binaries via the following location
in the AFS product tree:
/afs/transarc.com/product/afs/3.6/<systype>
