Some of the questions were strange....at any rate:
DSL piggybacks on standard phone line. Whatever you can do with your phones now, you
can do with DSL installed. You will still only have the one number if that is all you
subscribe to. Never heard of a line "filter" so can't answer that one. And lastly, no,
you can't do away with your phone line if it is the vehicle for DSL.

Here's the cost and the reason I'm so confused.
DSL Cost:
Service Activation: $100.00
Max 512k: $74.95 per mo
Plus:
Network Card: $69
Cross-Over Cable: $10.99
Addition Filters: $15.00
DSL modem included, but remains property of Phone Company.
Monthly charges includes one Internet account, one email account,
and Static IP.
Filters are needed to connect the phones to the DSL line, thus allowing
you place calls on the DSL line.
I guess I was confused after reading this page on ISDN which has
multiple chanels and thought DSL worked similar to this...
ISDN info:
Multiple Devices
Previously, it was necessary to have a phone line for each device you
wished to use simultaneously. For example, one line each was
required for a telephone, fax, computer, bridge/router, and live video
conference system. Transferring a file to someone while talking on the
phone or seeing their live picture on a video screen would require
several potentially expensive phone lines.
It is possible to combine many different digital data sources and have
the information routed to the proper destination. Since the line is
digital, it is easier to keep the noise and interference out while
combining these signals. ISDN technically refers to a specific set of
digital services provided through a single, standard interface. Without
ISDN, distinct interfaces are required instead.

I would start by pricing around!
Next, find a provider that will give you a router - free (Sprint did). Get a 5 port
hub (I think that is the smallest you can get) and two NIC cards - one for each unit.
The last requirement would be some cable with RJ-45s.
Monthly fee should be about 39 to 45 dollars unless you are in an area that has
limited DSL and ADSL available. Am using ADSL with a download of 512 and an upload of
128.
Another suggestion, unless you plan on dialing in to your computer from elsewhere and
NEED the static IP address, I would go with dynamic - less of a chance for someone to
zero in on you. My 2 cents worth...

Thanks Lexi
Unfortunately, I'm in the hands of a small telco. It's a MONOPOLY:-(
It was like with 56k modems, they were the last ones to get it, and the
highest priced in the land. To hear them tell it, they are doing me a
favor, and if it wasn't for them I would not even have a telephone.
