Hello...
I reformatted my hard drive and saved most of my important data
on CD-R's. When I finished, I then placed some text files back on
my computer in My Documents. Now, whenever I go to add to a text
page or even one in Word, I receive a message stating:
This file exists with Read Only attributes
What's that about and why can't I edit those files?! Is it in the
way I burned the CD or does this always happen. If it always
occurs how does one back up their entire important data on CD's?

I don't know how to prevent the Read Only attributes from being turned on
when you back them up but you can turn the Read Only attributes off easy
enough.
Open Windows Explorer up, find the highest folder up that contains all your
data that is now Read Only, right click the folder, choose Properties, then
uncheck the box near the bottom that says Read Only, then click Apply, then
OK.
All files and sub folders/files of that folder should no longer be Read
Only.
You can do this to individual files or folders too.

Pam

Files on CD's *ARE* read only...
Once they are burned on a CD you cannot edit the contents of the data on inside that
file, so its a READ ONLY file.
So when you copy that file back to a hard drive it remains set as READ ONLY.
You have to change that manually on the hard drive using properties.
I am sure that you cannot stop that from happening - after all when the file is on the
CD it IS "read only" and when you place it on the hard drive you are just putting a
copy there - attributes included.

Thanks everyone for your help. I think I have this back under
control. At least now I know what I am looking for and can edit
those files that I work with most often. I was able to change
them back to archive.

Joe...
What about if I had copied those files to a CD-RW? Would that
make a difference?
