Tac,

If you are connecting to a SQL Server 7.0. The best method is to go into
Client Network Utility and define your "alias" to the server. Here is where
you would specify the IP of the server, and give it a user friendly name.
Once you have done this go into ODBC Administrator and setup the System DSN
for the server. Using this method, I have so far not had any problems
defining datasource on servers on any remote networks (assuming your
firewall allows a TCP connection through on port 1433). I have found using
the CF Administrator not well suited for defining datasources for SQL Server
7.0. The main reason is that the new SQL 7.0 drivers have require more
settings than CF Admin provides to have it setup correctly.

Thanks,
David Sparkman

No, I've been spending a lot of time on the listserver administration stuff,
so I've held off on the back-end processing. I'm doing a demonstration to a
group of potential users next week, and they are much more interested in
ease of administration.

I'm using SQL Auth., but still not connecting. Question: in the ODBC
setup, when it asks for server, do you just need the IP address? I'm
assuming you need something more -- backslashes, alias name, something,
because that's not working.

Right now I have

data source name: TEST
description: <blank>
Server: 209.8.58.3
Cold Fusion Login: (username and password)

This identical configuration works if I give it the NAME of a SQL server,
rather than the IP address. I've also tried

209.8.58.3:1433

since 1433 is the port SQL-Server runs on. To no avail.

Thanks, I'm really stuck on this! I'll move this over to cf-talk if I can't
get this soon (so I won't be OT on this list)

Tac
