I'm new to the list, and new to the software. So new in fact, that I
haven't even tried to install any of the software yet. (Only 24 hours in a
normal day, ya know?) I had some questions about the capabilities of the
software, and how to best use it. So I figured posting this to the list
would be the best way, assuming there were (a) folks with much more
experience than I have at present time, and (b) folks who might be in the
same boat as I am regarding experience levels.
What I'm trying to accomplish with this software is simple. Or at least I
think it ought to be.
I have a client who wants a web based method of allowing their volunteers
to sign up for inclusion in special email lists. The volunteer would click
on the appropriate link to the sign-up page, enter their name, address,
email, etc into the form. Upon clicking submit, the data would be added to
a Microsoft Access database and an acknowledgement email sent to them.
There would be a second web page to allow self removals by entering their
email address and selecting which group(s) to be removed from.
There would be a third web page for admin and generating email to a
specific group. The staff member sending the message would fill in the
form with the sender's name, return email address, subject and text of the
message, and select which group to send it to.
Naturally all email messages would have an appropriate footer at the bottom
with removal instructions, and only those who had subscribed to the list
would get the mail.
I was concerned that using CFMail and Ben Forta's "mailform.cfm" method
would not be reliable for larger quantities of addresses. I shared this
concern with one our programmers who mentioned the software from IMS.
Does this software supplement / replace / conflict with our existing mail
server? Should I run this on a different server than where my existing
mail server is running?
For another organization which I host & belong to wanted to have be set up
some email list servers. Our mail server software will handle lists, but
only closed ones. i.e. a non-subscriber cannot send a message to a list
for broadcast to the recipients. They have to join the list first before
sending. We have a board of directors on a list. We want the members of
the organization to be able to send a message to "board@......" and be
distributed to all board members. I noticed this list seemed to be
handled via IMS software according to the footer message. Can I set up a
list server using this software?
Final stupid question... Which of the many packages available from the
download is the one that I need to download and use with my free licenses?
Now you can remove your hand from your forehead, wonder how such a totally
unknowing person could have even found his way to the original website, and
think about the answers to my questions.
Thanks in advance!
