I'm not so sure I'd call it a crock. They were impressively careful in
explaining the difficulties of checking addresses. Outstanding service, too.
The following is some of the info they provided:
===========================
OUTPUT FILES
Bad Syntax - addresses are not in valid format. Often a minor correction to
the address is needed in order for it to be valid. The most common reason
is that there is no valid extension (i.e. .com, .net, etc). The second most
common reason is that there is a space somewhere in the email address. Bad
syntax addresses are also included on the "bad" list.
Bad - addresses that are not deliverable. Generally, these consist of user
unknown errors. Also includes the addresses listed in the bad syntax file
to ensure that these are removed from the master list.
Unknown - addresses which were not resolvable at the time of the test.
Exist - confirmed deliverable addresses.
Please note: for the past few days, compuserve.com addresses have not been
resolving during our checks. Consequently, they will appear on
the unknown list.
===========================
But back to crock et al, are you also saying their methods will also give
false indications of bad addresses?
