I agree.  Our mail system is the same way, it'll accept almost any address at one of 
the domains we host, then send a bounce notice if there was no valid destination.  
That's because we have gateway mail servers which know the domains they are local for, 
but not all the users within those domains.  So even though the bounce will happen 
almost instantly, it's still not in the same SMTP session.  This is also the reason 
you can't 100% trust ReportPostStatus template to tell you which addresses bounce or 
not.

Also something to consider, I'm about to block this service you're talking about 
altogether (thanks for the info :).  So yes that would give you false negatives.
