"Rev Aitken's feelings about the issue were made plain weeks ago when the word 'Uniting' was blacked out on the prominent yellow signs at the front of the church."

Who are the signs outside of a church aimed at?

If they are meant for other church people, then what message is a blacked out "Uniting" supposed to give to them? If they are meant for the majority of Australians who have nothing to do with churches, then what is that black-out meant to say to them? If the sign is aimed at someone who perhaps wants to learn about Jesus and is looking at coming into that church for the first time, then what is a blacked out word on a sign meant to tell them about that church and the people in it?

What about those churches who have painted "An Evangelical Congregation" in big blue letters on their signs? What is that sign supposed to say and who is it trying to say those things to?

The Uniting Church congregation near my parent's home in Adelaide now has those big blue letters on its sign. I worship there on my infrequent visits to Adelaide. Is that sign telling me that this is a congregation which is desperate to share some fantastically good news with me and anyone else? Is the sign telling me that I am welcome, but now only if I agree with their theological position? Or is it simply saying "No poofters allowed"?
