My wife, who teached preschool aged children in government preschools, finds seemingly
endless variations on names. I wonder whether it has anything to do with a desire on
the part of parents to give their children a distinctive identity. I also wonder
whether it instead impales the young person on a pike of explaining their whole life
that there name is pronounced and spelled this way rather than what many prople would
assume might be that way... and whether the parent would do such a thing if they had
such a name themselves.

Consider... Jared, Jarred, Jarod, Jarid, Jerrod, Jerad, Jerrad, etc....

In similar vein, writer Sandra Rossi offers these thoughts in an article that flopped
onto my electronic desktop:
"I have a friend who suffered the misfortune of being named after a well-known
Australian boxer. His father gave him exactly the same first and last name as the
boxer with the expectation that the son would, one day, be a great Aussie brawler. But
the sad reality is that my friend is as timid as a mouse.
In fact he is one of the most gentle men I have ever met. My friend is in a constant
state of despair because he didn't live up to his father's expectations, and didn't
live up to his famous name.
Even worse, his name is an endless reminder that he is not the tough man he was
supposed to be, and a lifelong source of disappointment to his father.
This is a true story and before you feel sorry for my friend, remember that in the
real world we have to accept that life isn't always as we would like it to be.
The challenge is to live with such shortcomings and make the most of our environment."
