Thanks for those insights, Ted. Perhaps a
good way to promote the distinctive “DNA” is to use a large
noticeboard which is frequently changed. I know my own U/C Congregation has a
reputation, at least amongst the students of the nearby Christian school, as being
“the oldies church”. Rather than being a handicap, this has
served us in good stead. When the local Presbyterian Church decided to go all
contemporary, 20 older families left in disgust and came and joined us. We have
started to see our “gift” as working with the aged, and I have
modified my continuing ed. to focus on ageing and spirituality – which is
quite an interesting field! This is not to say that we don’t have some
contemporary emphasis – a small Kidz Biz group and a once a month
contemporary service, plus a once a month ecumenical contemporary service. The
kids from the Christian school who call us the “oldies church” also
like to come and use our church for chapel because they like the feel of it. - Greg From:

Endacott <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I’m reading a book at the
moment that suggests that a large part of the decline of denominational
allegiance is due to the fact that most denominations have moved so far, or
lost altogether, the original charism (for the sake of a better word) that
brought that denomination into being. Spot on. The job now is to assess whether the original charism still
makes sense. Some charisms have a 'use-by' date. Some need only minor tuning to
become alive and attractive again.
No, I think that growing diversity of practice creeps into every
denomination, until they all feature a similar range of distinctive styles (eg
charo, social justice, evangelical, liberal, etc).
Yes, i am particularly concerned that the original Wesleyan concept of
the church as a "movement" has been lost, with a clumsy, crumbling
institution taking its place. I’d
never thought of it that way before. |
