Re automatic time-stamping and logging, isn't there a "logger" command in
Linux?

I don't have a Linux box near me here at work.  On our Sun boxes though, I
use the logger command to log important one-liners into /var/adm/messages .
I also have an "adminlogfile" and a smallish script "vial" (Vi AdminLog)
command to add time-stamps and my notes to the file.
