*Chuckle* I think the idea of an easy install, linux, and a laptop is an
oximoron, but we won't go there..>:)

Actualy, let me put it this way...I don't think you HAVE to spend the money
on the Xserver, I've heard many good reports on RedHat's Neomagic Xserver.
It WILL probably be a bit harder to install than the standard $160
package, but it's worth it to go through a little more hastle to save $160.
As far as NT goes, whether it's a hack or not (and I stand corrected, let
me put it this way, Dell doesn't support NT on inspirons..but NT can be
installed on it, to possibly good results. I just have a stricter
definition of hack than most...if I have to spend extra money or especialy
install drivers for a completely different machine to get it to work, I
define it as a hack..:) ) I'm not sure if you should canel your order or
not...but I'm not sure I would before that 30 day period...inspirions are
great laptops, it's just their support for anything but win95 or win98
sucks big.

Subject: Should I cancel my i7K order?

Looking for recommended Linux laptops.

Geez,

After listening to this group for about a week I'm worried about having
ordered an inspiron 7000 about 10 days ago.

I wanted to be able to run Win95 and linux for sure and maybe NT. But I
understand the i7K has a winmodem which won't work in linux. Then I heard
you need to buy a $160 X server to get X working. And now I hear NT is
(almost) a hack to get working.

I understand I have 30 days after my i7K order arrives during which I can
decide to return it for a refund. So I suppose I could cancel the order
now
if I find something more suitable to my needs.

Do any of you have recommendations for a nice laptop (at least 14.1" XGA
TFT
screen, 64Mb RAM, 4Gb Hd, 56K modem, good sound, good graphics) which works
very well and very easily with Linux and which will also work win win98 and
NT?
