I have exactly the same behavior. APM works fine from text mode, but "blows up"
when running X. (I'm using After Step, if that matters).

Sorry I don't have a solution, but I can definitely reproduce your error, for
whatever that's worth...

I, too, would love to know if anyone has solved this one.
