That's a good question.  I usually suspend my machine by hand (with apm)
before closing it up because when I use the built in close thing it
doesn't really do it right.  I notice whenever I open it back up it is in
two suspend states kind of.  I push a key and it comes back on then goes
into full suspend.  Plus I think it gobbles battery that way because it
must still be running in standby.  What I believe is happening is that the
little button puts the computer in standby mode then the timeout hits
while it's down and it goes to suspend, but isn't ready because it's in
standby.  Either way it's bad.  I haven't seen anything to disable it, but
I have been meaning to call Dell about that one.  I'll do it tomorrow.
