I have an Inspriton 3200. I would recommend going to www.linux.org and find
the linux for laptops page. From there you can find the Inspiron 3000/3200
pages. There are a number of pages that will give you most of the information
you will need. If you have some specific questions, I have found this
mailing list very helpful.

The main problems you will run into will be configuring PCMCIA services, and
installing the XWindows server for your neomagic chipset. Neither are really
that problematic if you read the ways to solve them.

You will spend a couple of weeks trying to get everything configured properly.
That is just the way it works. I would recommend buying the CD-ROM, either
from Red Hat (or Cheap Bytes or LinuxMall if you want to save some money). I
wasted about a week trying to do a ftp-install, which I couldn't do because the
PCMCIA services do not get set up properly during the setup) Also, if you have
never used a Unix-like operating system before, buy a good book on introduction
to Linux.

Overall, if you want to reduce the time you spend installing Linux, spend a lot
of time reading before you install it. That is what I found most useful.
