WARNING, THIS IS STRICTLY THEORETICAL:
Windows has some system files which cannot be relocated (you can see them when
you defrag your hard drive). You can back up your VFAT partition and restore it
via linux but those system files will quite likely be relocated. This will make
the restored partition unbootable, but all the data will be there, including
your registry.
Theoretically, you can then put in your Win98 CDROM and do an install. The
install should detect that you have an existing (albeit broken) installation and
do a fixup rather than a full install. This should fix up whatever is
hard-pointing to the system files and you should be running again.
This should be much less destructive, faster, and easier than installing Win98
and then restoring.
Another option: BRU can back up raw partitions. Theoretically you can use that
feature to back up the VFAT partition and restore it bit-for-bit in which case
it should work fine after the restore. The disadvantage is that you cannot do
an incremental raw partition backup, you have to back up the whole thing every
time.
ANOTHER WARNING: I HAVE NOT TRIED THIS AND HOPE I NEVER HAVE TO TRY IT :-).
If someone out there has a machine they are willing to try this on, I'm sure
there are a lot of people interested in the results.

Hi,
I have the following problem: I am backing up my i7k Win98 partition using a
tape drive that is connected to the machine through a PCMCIA card (bus toaster).
I would like to create a boot disk that will allow me to restore the system in
case of a disaster without having to install Win98 first. Unfortunately, Dell
does not supply DOS card and socket services to enable me to create this boot
disk. Any idea how can I do it?
Another option I have, is to backup the vfat partition (the Win98 partition)
from Linux for which I have a boot disk that loads the PCMCIA drivers. Would
such a full restore work? Would I be able to restore the system from Linux in
such a way that Win98 will not have to be installed first?
Thanks,
Avi
