It's trivial enough to change the panel layout to match JDS--we've been mulling over the provision of a GUI switch to do so, at some point. Just swap out the Menubar applet (Apps/System/Places) for the Main Menu applet (aka the Launch menu), middle-button-drag everything you want to keep from the top panel to the bottom panel, and delete the top panel. The Launch Menu layout is currently quite different in OpenSolaris though-- the JDS quick launch area isn't there, it's replaced by the contents of the JDS "All Applications" submenu. That's just because we don't currently build those menu patches for OpenSolaris, but if you'd like to see them in some future release, feel free to open a request on http://defect.opensolaris.org.
