Yeah, that's a big issue - I don't see it as being particularly useful 
in that context, and I'm aware that we have any plans to change that 
situation.

We have people looking into that and other issues, so you probably don't 
need to spend your own precious time on it, Darren ;-)  For what it's 
worth, I think it would be a good change.  I'd be surprised if any of 
the other OpenSolaris distributions chose to do anything like the 
Solaris patch model.
