The current status is that there is no status. Upgrading from Solaris
10 to Opensolaris (the distro) while planned (and of course needed
eventually) is way down on the list of priorities atm.

That said, if you're feeling brave (and very very lucky) you can take
this blog posting:

And try to adapt it to your needs. It talks about moving from SXCE to
OpenSolaris but it somewhat applies to your situation. The caveat being
that you would need to be booted off of an OpenSolaris liveCD since none
of the required software is available for S10. I haven't tried that
avenue (from liveCD) but I have used a script very similar to do an
install from OpenSolaris onto a second disk in the same machine. I will
caution you, this isn't for the faint of heart. You could very well
likely end up with a machine that won't boot anything without doing a
complete system reinstall. So take a really good backup before you
start and be prepared to get your hands dirty. Have I sufficiently
conveyed the message 'this is highly experimental and hacky' to you? :-)

That complicates things tremendously. In order to do this, you would at
least need to compile IPS (image packaging system) on S10. And that's
just for starters. Even then, I doubt you'd be able to make the entire
process work properly as a lot of the software involved just isn't meant
to run on S10 and the versions in S10 are likely too old to be of use.
If booting off of a CD was viable, you could probably do this from the
OpenSolaris LiveCD.

Otherwise, you could try upgrading to SXCE via live upgrade (though
again, take a really good backup and don't be too surprised if it
doesn't 'just work' since live upgrade is going away in SXCE eventually
there isn't any work going on to make sure that upgrades from S10 to
SXCE actually work).

Cheers,
