I've seen this sort of failure mode when OpenSolaris doesn't have a
driver for the RAID chipset.  For instance, I have a Dell XPS 420 box
that has an ICH9R chipset which OpenSolaris doesn't support yet and so I
have to disable this in the BIOS in order to see my disks under
OpenSolaris.

Why are you using any sort of hardware raid.  Why not just let ZFS
manage the disks in a mirrored configuration?  I'm pretty sure that's
recommended.
