Thank you Brock Pytlik and Shawn Walker for your help and advice.
I actually did run this command as the root user: pkg install -v SUNWipkg
before I attempted to do the the pkg image-update. Note that before I did
the "pkg install -v SUNWipkg" command my output for the "pkg info SUNWipkg"
command looked like this:
# pkg info SUNWipkg
Name: SUNWipkg
Summary: Image Packaging System
Category: System/Packaging
State: Installed
Authority: opensolaris.org
Version: 0.5.11
Build Release: 5.11
Branch: 0.101
Packaging Date: Wed Nov 19 22:34:49 2008
Size: 1.88 MB
FMRI: pkg:/[email protected],5.11-0.101:20081119T223449Z
after I did the "pkg install -v SUNWipkg" command, my output for the "pkg
info SUNWipkg" command looked like this:
# pkg info SUNWipkg
Name: SUNWipkg
Summary:
State: Installed
Publisher: opensolaris.org
Version: 0.5.11
Build Release: 5.11
Branch: 0.101
Packaging Date: Tue May 12 15:01:20 2009
Size: 2.66 MB
FMRI: pkg:/[email protected],5.11-0.101:20090512T150120Z
It was only after I was certain that I had the newest (the May 2009) version
of SUNWipkg installed from the support repository and was thus ready to
upgrade to OpenSolaris 2009.06 snv_111b, I then did the pkg image-update and
got the Python stack trace error message that I posted earlier.
Which version of SUNWipkg is the version that is affected by this bug? And
which version of SUNWipkg is the version that has this bug fixed in it. Is
there is a way that I can download the fixed version of SUNWipkg manually
and use "pkgadd -d" to add it if IPS won't let me install it? Or, if I do
yet another "pkg install -v SUNWipkg" command at the command line will I get
yet another version of SUNWipkg that has the bug fixed in it and then I will
be able to pkg image-update?
