When you are upgrading to a new OS , you should always do a clean install. And , to me it looks like your laptop is overheating. If it's not under warranty anymore and you are at ease with opening it up, I'd suggest cleaning the laptop fan. Not just the "wings/paddels" but also inside ( For example, my Gateway Laptop fan is set in a kind of box, cleaning the sides will let space for airflow and will demand less "torque" from the fan itself as it might be working too hard to get started in the first place, therefore damaging it in the long run ).
