I've worked with some low-end gpus, and unless they have a really good
cpu to back it up (like at least a P8600, or better a T series),
having the lowest end gpu might even perform worse than intel gpus on
certain cases. The safe choice is always to go at least with the
slightly below medium range gpus, like nvidia 8400gt/8600gs, or
9500gt, for ati 3650 or 4650. Anything below that will be pure crap.
You can save a lot of cash if you go for a pentium dual core instead
of a core duo, but for me the cpu raw power is more important and it's
up to you if the price difference is enough to justify saving the
cash.
About that memory sharing from main memory to an onboard solution,
that's pure CRAP. Most high/ultra end gpus don't use all their memory
in the heaviest games, and for using huge amounts of video memory the
settings must be all near or at maximum, so a lowest end gpu would
never run ok with those settings, and shared memory is slower than
dedicated memory, aside from an onboard gpu being also slower than a
dedicated one.
