Either get a really fast dual core like a E8400, or go for regular and
above quad cores like Q9400, but know that i7 is king of all. And
since having a fast cpu paired with a slow gpu will give you lower
performance, set minimum performance standards (after all, you want a
dramatically different experience from intel, right?) with acceptable
pricing range. Medium range gpus are your best bet. A nvidia GTX260 is
a medium to high end gpu that has plenty of horsepower and will last
you for years, or you can wait for price reductions on GTX460, if you
really need dx11 support. You can also save a bit more and instead of
a GTX260 you can go for a GTS250. On ati side you can go with a HD
4890, or a HD 5750 for dx11 support.
Nvidia 8SP/Ati 40SP is the nearest thing you have from intel, so it's
the thing you want to avoid the most. You have very cheap nvidias with
32SP that runs things at smooth fps if you set your game configs
right.
One last note, a better cpu isn't just a faster cpu by itself, it also
speeds other components as well.
