Most games set wrong settings through automatic detection. Some
settings can be pushed higher while others need to be lower, it's
really a lot of trial and error sometimes. Maybe take a look at this
guide and see if it can help:

Also, I didn't know it used source engine, which works incredibly
better on windows vista/7 than on xp.

@THEfog: Leave desktop overclocking out of this, of course there are
huge gains in performance, but laptops just don't support it. Even the
slightest overclock on a laptop can do terminal damage, it can really
come to luck, as two exactly equal chipsets can work radically
different under higher clocks. Why go for a risky procedure before
running through all the other safe options? Specially since youre a
mod. That just shocks me, there's an example to be set.
