Oh, and I mention the X-Fi Go USB because it's more of an entry level upgrade, with improvements for both sound in general and the whole game effects. The X-Fi HD USB is a different animal :) more geared towards the audiophile crowd and just about anyone who wants some serious SQ.
You should convert your vynil collection to lossless as soon as you can. Even though you can perfectly enjoy vynil, having a perfect copy stored is always a good idea. And yes, stereo beats 5.1 or 7.1 easily, specially when it comes to music. Good gear will give a very nice soundstage, which makes up for quite a good gaming and movie experience.
