Let's see now:
The official name is, as far as I know, "The Russian Federation." The
republics that used to be part of the Soviet Union are now called:
"The Newly Independent States".
Most of them belong to the newly created body, called CIS, Commonwealth of
Independent States.

The Russian Federation consists of 21 republics, one autonomous region, 10
autonomous areas, six territories, 49 regions and two federal cities, Moscow
and St. Petersburg.
