But when we talk about packet loss and Intermapper we have to remind people
that packet loss reported is the result of Intermapper sending out packets
and expecting a reply. If it doesn't get one it chalks it up to packet
loss.

Packet Loss report by Intermapper is not the result of info returned from
SNMP from the remote device.

This packet loss is relative to what is happening in the network. If there
is network congestion anywhere along the path to/from the device, and
especially if there is QoS configured - Intermapper's packets may get
outright dropped or dropped in favour of other traffic. However, should
this packet loss be counted against the device at the end of the chain?

Especially with QoS, is this then "packet loss" or how the network was
configured to operate?

And just one question as I can't recall reading it anywhere, are the packets
that Intermapper sends to measure "packet loss" UDP or TCP?

SNMP is UDP and as such is prone to be dropped as it is a connectionless
protocol. Even if Intermapper is using TCP, QoS could still knock it out if
prioritized applications are taking up the bandwidth.

At the moment I have set the threshold to require 100 packets out of 100 to
effectively disable this feature.

InterMapper has reported packet loss for a long time, but it did not
cause alarms/warnings/etc. for packet loss in older versions; this
feature was added in 4.5. So previously, while it would have reported
the number in the status window, it would have been up to you to
notice that it was high.

This is why you only get alarms, etc., with the new version.
