We're looking at this for disaster recovery, etc.

So far we have a Windows 2003 server with our main IM.
On this server we have VSS running and we have installed Vice-Versa Pro.

Vice-Versa Pro has a VSS client.  This means that you can copy open files
that IM has locked.

So far, it looks good - but we haven't done the acid test yet - shut down
the main IM and stand up the standby.

But that's going to happen soon.  (we have to schedule it of course)

You would definitely need to shut down the test server. I think it 
would be safer if you were to shut down both, to avoid doing the copy 
while IM is in the midst of auto-saving a map or writing something to 
the prefs. (If you want to copy logs and chart data, too, you 
definitely have to shut down both.)
