Folks,
We have learned of a nasty bug in Apple's Java Virtual Machine (JVM) that can
affect InterMapper users. The symptoms are that the InterMapper GUI appears to
freeze: the windows do not respond to mouse or keyboard, and people report that
they have to force quit.
It only happens when using OSX 10.5 or 10.6 with Java version 1.6.0_20. (installed
with Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 7 or Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 2) with
InterMapper (and RemoteAccess) versions 5.2.6 and earlier. We believe we have
found a workaround, and will publish this as soon as possible as version 5.2.7
(early next week).
[For the terminally curious: This can occur when a window opens with a resizable,
modal "sheet" to collect information. What actually happens is that the sheet
opens *behind* the current window: everything continues to operate normally, but
you cannot see the sheet to operate it. We have submitted a reproducible bug report
to Apple, so we expect this will be fixed at some future time.]
As a workaround:
- Don't install updates to Java (versions listed above) on your Mac. Versions
1.6.0_17 and earlier seem to be OK.
- If this happens to you, you can usually use the Escape key to close the sheet
and try again.
- Wait until we release version 5.2.7 next week.
Note: This same problem also affects the 5.3 beta builds that are out for testing.
The same workarounds are available, and we will have a more stable fix when we
ship the final version.
