Call for Papers "Pathways of Human Dignity: From Cultural Traditions to a New Paradigm" ESF-LiU Conference European Science Foundation University of Linköping Vadstena (Sweden) 31 October - 4 November 2007 __________________________________________________ Human Dignity is a notion of central moral, legal, political and philosophical importance, as has been widely accepted since the United Nations adopted its Universal Declaration of Human Rights nearly 60 years ago. There is much that remains unclear, however, regarding the historical roots of the notion of human dignity, its role in the history of different religions and cultural traditions, and its internal relationship to human rights. Moreover, within current debates over international justice and bioethics, both the implications of this notion and its precise content are deeply controversial. Pathways to Human Dignity is the final conference in a series of workshops, organized by the European Science Foundation and the University of Linköping, the International Union of Academies, the UNESCO, the International Social Science Council, the International Council for Philosophy and Humanistic Studies, the Institute for Catalan Studies and the Netherlands Research School for Practical Philosophy. The conference aims to bring together the various perspectives on and debates over human dignity and to identify, from the perspectives of different disciplines, what further research is needed. The conference will take place at Klosterhotel in Vadstena, Sweden. Vadstena is located in the south-eastern province of Östergötland, in a lovely natural setting on the shores of beautiful Lake Vättern, offering comfortable accommodation in a historic environment. During the Middle Ages, Vadstena was the location of a catholic monastery for monks and nuns of the Birgittine order and nowadays the conference center and hotel is largely located in the same medieval buildings that were once the monastery. With 5 600 inhabitants, Vadstena is 45 km from Linköping and 330 km from Stockholm. Group transportation will be arranged from/to Linköping airport, via Linköping train station, on arrival and departure days. Some grants are available for young researchers to cover the conference fee and possibly part of the travel costs. Grant requests should be made by ticking appropriate field(s) in the paragraph "Grant application" of the application form. Closing date for application & abstract submission: 31 August 2007.
