Call for Papers

"Rights and Education"
39th NERA Congress
Nordic Educational Research Association (NERA)
Faculty of Education, University of Jyväskylä
Jyväskylä (Finland)
10-12 March 2011

The focus of the NERA 2011 Congress will be the topic of human rights
in the context of education and the educational sciences. The
congress aims to provide an interdisciplinary forum for approaching
an enhanced understanding of rights in the fields of education,
education policy, and education research. NERA 2011 seeks to combine
academic expertise and pedagogical perspectives, including those of
human rights education.

Recent decades have seen the global spread of a human rights ethos.
Its impact can be observed in the extensive development of, for
example, international human rights instruments and the worldwide
public adoption of human rights discourses. Indeed, people seeking
access to social and political resources increasingly frame their
claims in the language of human rights.

Rights discourses play an important role in emancipatory struggles
and in the practices and methods of governance. The language of the
rights discourses is adopted by a variety of actors, despite the fact
that they articulate competing conceptions and interpretations of
human rights. Consequently, the ambivalences and tensions inherent to
rights talk have long been the subjects of scholarly attention.
