A fishing boat lost in the massive Japanese tsunami a year ago has turned up
off Canada's west coast. An aerial inspection suggested there was no one on
board.

The 65-metre vessel (left) was spotted by a Canadian Forces aircraft on a
routine surveillance patrol, floating right side up 278 kilometres off the
southern coast of the Haida Gwaii archipelago, some 1500 kilometres north of
Vancouver.

The ship is the first, and largest, item confirmed to have crossed the Pacific
from Japan's devastating tsunami.

Canada's province of British Columbia and the western US states of Washington,
Oregon and California have agreed to return items of sentimental value to Japan.
